On April 4, the Ashanti Regional Police Command initiated an investigation into a firearm incident that occurred at the Adventist Senior High School. Preliminary findings indicate that a 16-year-old second-year student brought a locally manufactured pistol with ammunition to school. An accidental discharge during an attempt to show the firearm to a classmate resulted in another student being injured.
A press release issued by Deputy Superintendent of Police Mr. Godwin Atsu Ahianyo confirmed that all names related to the incident are being withheld. The injured student was promptly treated at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
The juvenile suspect, who has been arrested, revealed that he obtained the weapon without his father’s knowledge from his father’s bedroom. Authorities are currently working to locate the suspect’s father to assist in the investigation and have retained the empty cartridge as evidence.
The investigation into the Adventist Senior High School shooting reveals significant concerns regarding firearm accessibility among minors. The incident underscores the importance of parental accountability and the need for heightened security measures in educational institutions. The situation continues to develop as police seek to apprehend the suspect’s father for further investigation.
