Nepal Provides 27 Tons of Relief to Earthquake-Affected Myanmar

The relief items, including food, daily essentials, and medical supplies, were officially handed over at Yangon International Airport on Thursday morning.

During the handover, Joint Secretary Tapas Adhikari from Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the delegation included 16 members, comprising Foreign Ministry officials and media representatives. The ceremony was attended by Nepali Ambassador to Myanmar, Harish Chandra Ghimire, and officials from Myanmar, who also engaged in a brief dialogue regarding the situation.

In his address, Joint Secretary Adhikari expressed condolences to the victims’ families and emphasized Nepal’s commitment to support Myanmar in this challenging time. He noted the historical support of Myanmar to Nepal during the 2015 earthquake and highlighted that this cooperation will strengthen the relationship between the two nations.

A representative from Myanmar, Heu Wai Lwin, expressed gratitude towards Nepal for its aid. He reported that the earthquake had tragically claimed over 3,590 lives, with approximately 4,800 individuals injured and 148 still missing.

Ambassador Ghimire mentioned that around 150,000 Nepalis are currently residing in Myanmar, with 18 fatalities and 15 individuals remaining unaccounted for due to the earthquake. The region experienced a magnitude 7.7 earthquake on March 28. Meanwhile, an umbrella organization of Nepalis is offering shelter to approximately 250 earthquake survivors, while a Nepali Army medical team continues to provide emergency medical assistance to affected individuals.

Nepal’s timely response to the earthquake in Myanmar represents a profound act of solidarity between the two nations during a crisis.
