The quake was centered in Chefchaouen, reaching a depth of 10 kilometers (approximately 6.2 miles), with about 420 individuals reporting they felt the tremors during that time.

In a related occurrence, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck in Vanuatu on the same day, centered in Port-Vila at a depth of 18 kilometers (approximately 11.9 miles). This followed a more powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake in the Cayman Islands just two days prior, on February 8, which was centered in George Town at a depth of 10 kilometers (about 6.2 miles).

Notably, a tsunami warning was temporarily issued for the Mexican coastline, although it was lifted two hours later. The National Weather Service Warning Center stated, “With the latest modeling and information, the tsunami threat has passed. There are no alerts posted for the United States or International Partners. The tsunami threat has passed. Unusual currents may be noticed in some areas. Exercise normal caution.”

Furthermore, the seismic activity did not end there; it followed a series of smaller earthquakes in California and Alaska. A 3.4-magnitude earthquake struck Petrolia, California on February 7, shortly after a 2.9-magnitude quake in the same location on February 6. Earlier, on February 5, Alaska experienced a 4.3-magnitude earthquake in Sustina, which highlights the widespread seismic activity in the region.

The recent occurrences of earthquakes across various regions, including Morocco, Vanuatu, and the Cayman Islands, underline the significant seismic activity that has transpired in a short timeframe. While the tsunami threat associated with these quakes has been lifted, caution in affected areas is still advised.
