Tragic Toll: 60 Lives Lost in Zimbabwe’s Rainfall-Related Disasters

Since the rainy season began in October, Zimbabwe has witnessed 60 fatalities and 9 injuries due to rainfall-related incidents. Harare: The Department of Civil Protection (DCP) reported that since the onset of the rainy season last October, a tragic total of 60 individuals have lost their lives in rainfall-related incidents across Zimbabwe, with nine others suffering injuries. Following an initial period of below-average rainfall from October to December 2024, the country has faced severe downpours starting in January, which have led to multiple rain-induced calamities including drownings and lightning strikes.

The DCP’s situation report highlights the significant damage inflicted on public infrastructure due to heavy rains, affecting schools, healthcare facilities, roadways, bridges, dams, electricity poles, and irrigation systems. In response to this crisis, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has expressed condolences to the families impacted, according to Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe, who also lamented the devastation caused by these weather-related disasters.

Minister Garwe has advised artisanal miners to halt operations until ground conditions improve, urging citizens to stay clear of open areas during storms and to avoid crossing flooded rivers. He emphasized the importance of remaining informed through reliable weather updates as a means of enhancing safety.

To address the ongoing situation, the DCP, in collaboration with law enforcement and the Zimbabwe Defense Forces, is actively conducting search and rescue operations. The government is also engaged in mobilizing resources to support recovery efforts across the affected regions. Zimbabwe’s rainy season is generally observed from October through March.
