On March 1, 2025, the Indian Coast Guard Ship Sachet embarked on a vital mission to Sudan, delivering over two tons of essential medicines, including anti-cancer drugs. This initiative reflects India’s commitment to humanitarian assistance, as stated by the Ministry of External Affairs, which emphasized the importance of providing aid to the people of Sudan amid their ongoing crisis.
The ship’s departure for Sudan follows its earlier journey to Djibouti, where it transported medical supplies, including 20 haemodialysis machines and one reverse osmosis plant. These contributions are part of India’s broader humanitarian efforts to support nations facing dire circumstances, particularly in regions suffering from conflict and food insecurity.
The ongoing conflict in Sudan, which erupted in April 2023, has displaced millions and aggravated the humanitarian situation, affecting over 25 million individuals across Sudan, South Sudan, and Chad. The World Food Programme warns that the conflict risks evolving into the world’s largest hunger crisis.
India’s humanitarian efforts extend beyond Sudan, having dispatched 26 tons of aid to Honduras in response to Tropical Storm SARA, which included medical supplies and disaster relief materials. Furthermore, a consignment of medical equipment, such as bronchodilators and ventilators, was sent to the Kurdistan region of Iraq in January 2025, showcasing India’s commitment to global assistance.
The Indian Coast Guard Ship Sachet’s journey to Sudan underscores India’s dedication to humanitarian aid, especially amidst regional conflicts. By providing essential medicines and medical equipment to various nations, India aims to alleviate suffering and promote health and well-being. This consistent support reinforces India’s role as a significant player in international humanitarian efforts.
