Edo Police Detain Eight Suspects Following Killing of Site Engineer

Eight suspects have been detained by the Edo Police in connection with the death of deaf site engineer Efe Ogbeide, amid a leadership crisis in Obazagbon Community. CSP Moses Yamu confirmed the arrests, identifying community leader Joshua Edo as the prime suspect. The incident has led to protests from civil society groups calling for justice and improved protection for individuals with disabilities.

The Edo Police Command has arrested eight individuals in connection with the death of Efe Ogbeide, a site engineer, amid a leadership conflict in the Obazagbon Community of Benin. Spokesperson CSP Moses Yamu confirmed the arrests, identifying Joshua Edo, the Chairman of the community youths, as the primary suspect among those detained.

Additional suspects include Obayuwana Happy, Uhunwangho Everest, Chidera Umeh, Simon Benjamin, Odion Adagbonyin, Kennedy Ohro, and Osayi Adagbonyin. The arrests were executed by the Iyekogba Division’s Operation Rescue and Anti-Kidnapping Unit at various locations in the area.

The ongoing crisis is reportedly rooted in disputes for leadership roles, leading to several fatalities and damages estimated in millions of naira. Commissioner of Police, Betty Isokpan, voiced condemnation of the violence and assured that all perpetrators will be held accountable.

The murder of Ogbeide has incited protests among civil society, particularly from the Network for the Advancement of People with Visible Disabilities and Edo State Civil Society Organizations. Executive Director Melody Omosha remarked on the tragic killing of a dedicated engineer, underscoring that Ogbeide was deaf and likely did not perceive the impending danger before the attack.

These organizations have called for justice in Ogbeide’s case and emphasized the need for enhanced protection for individuals with disabilities within the state.
