Kenya Meteorological Department Warns of Heavy Rainfall Week Ahead

The Kenya Meteorological Department warns of moderate to heavy rainfall in numerous regions across Kenya from March 7 to March 11, 2025. Key areas include the highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, and Central and South Rift Valley. Initial dry and hot conditions will yield to rainfall, with notably dry weather in North Eastern counties.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning regarding anticipated moderate to heavy rainfall in multiple regions across the country from Friday, March 7, 2025, through Tuesday, March 11, 2025. The advisory highlights that eight specific regions, including the highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Central and South Rift Valley, are expected to be most affected.

In addition to the aforementioned areas, rainfall is also predicted for the Coastal Region, southeastern lowlands, northwest, and parts of the southern coast. The meteorological department mentioned that, while many regions will encounter predominantly sunny, dry, and hot conditions initially, the weather is expected to shift to possible rainfall, particularly from the upcoming weekend.

Counties situated in the highlands east, such as Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, and others, are forecasted to experience moderate to heavy rainfall beginning Saturday and continuing through Tuesday. The advisory indicates that these areas will have hot and sunny conditions on Friday before rainfall arrives.

Similarly, heavy rains are expected across counties in the Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley like Siaya, Kisumu, and Migori from Sunday, March 9, to Tuesday, March 12. Additional counties such as Nakuru, Narok, and others are also anticipated to face similar weather conditions.

In contrast, the North Eastern region, which includes Marsabit, Mandera, and Garissa, is predicted to remain dry and sunny over the weekend. The meteorological department also warned of high temperatures that may exceed 30°C in most regions, excluding the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, where temperatures are projected to remain cooler. Furthermore, strong southeast winds reaching 25 knots (12.9 m/s) are expected in certain parts of northwestern and northeastern Kenya.

The Kenya Meteorological Department’s advisory underscores the anticipation of significant rainfall across various regions from March 7 to March 11, 2025. While some areas will experience initial sunny and dry conditions, others, particularly in the highlands and Rift Valley, are set for heavy rains, contrasting with the expected dry weather in the North Eastern region. Awareness of these weather patterns is essential for preparedness and safety.
