Scrap Dealer Sentenced to Prison for Theft of Ghana Water Fittings
Tahiru Issah, a 20-year-old scrap dealer, was sentenced to 12 months in prison for stealing water fittings valued at GHS 3,250. Apprehended during a police patrol, he admitted to the crime, which has prompted Ghana Water Limited to urge community vigilance against such thefts.
The Ashaiman Circuit Court has imposed a 12-month prison sentence with hard labour on 20-year-old scrap dealer Tahiru Issah for theft, following his guilty plea on March 5, 2025. This case underscores the seriousness with which the law treats theft, particularly concerning valuable property belonging to Ghana Water Limited.
Chief Inspector Henry Tetteh Nartey reported that Tahiru Issah, a Nigerien residing in Fitter Line, was apprehended on February 26, 2025, during a routine police patrol. Officers discovered a black polythene bag containing six stopcocks, six safety valves, and one return valve, valued at GHS 3,250.00, which were stolen from Ghana Water Limited.
Subsequently, Issah was arrested and taken to the Afienya Police Station, where he confessed to stealing the plumbing fittings from local residents. He was then charged and held in custody prior to his court appearance.
Dr. Samuel Eson, the Regional Chief Manager for Ghana Water Limited’s Tema Region, expressed appreciation for the court’s ruling. He noted that the company has faced various instances of meter theft, which adversely impact operations. Dr. Eson urged the community to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activities to the police, emphasizing that individuals involved in similar crimes will face severe legal consequences.
The sentencing of Tahiru Issah reflects the judiciary’s commitment to combating theft, especially of essential infrastructure.
