Over 28 Million Iraqis Eligible to Vote in Upcoming Parliamentary Elections
The IHEC announced that over 28 million Iraqis are eligible to vote in the October 2025 parliamentary elections, marking a notable increase since the last elections. Key districts leading in voter eligibility include Rusafa and Karkh. Additionally, almost one million new voters will participate as they reach the age of 18.
The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) of Iraq has announced that over 28 million Iraqis, equating to 60.7% of the population, are eligible to vote in the upcoming parliamentary elections set for October 2025. The IHEC reported an increase in eligible voters, with the Rusafa district in Baghdad having the largest number of participants, followed by districts such as Karkh, Maysan, Nineveh, Anbar, and Dhi Qar.
The commission also highlighted that nearly one million Iraqis born in 2007 have attained the legal voting age of 18. Additionally, it confirmed that according to the amended Election Law No. 12 of 2018, parliamentary elections must be announced at least 45 days prior to the conclusion of the current legislative term.
For context, the eligible voter count for the 2021 elections was 25,139,375, while the number stood at 24,352,253 for the 2018 elections, indicating a noteworthy growth in voter eligibility.
In summary, the IHEC has identified over 28 million eligible voters for the upcoming elections, reflecting a significant increase compared to previous election years. This enhancement in voter eligibility is partly due to new young voters reaching the legal age. The IHEC’s adherence to the Election Law ensures structured and timely elections.
