Mozambique’s Health Ministry Launches Overseas Training for Specialist Doctors

Mozambique’s Ministry of Health has started an accelerated overseas training program for specialist doctors to address a shortage in critical medical areas. Over the next five years, this initiative aims to bolster healthcare services while an electronic tracking mechanism for medicines will also be introduced to prevent diversion.

The Ministry of Health (MISAU) in Mozambique has initiated an accelerated program for the overseas training of specialist doctors to address the existing shortage in critical areas. This initiative, expected to span the next five years, aims not only to enhance the number of qualified medical professionals but also to focus on specific critical fields that require urgent attention. Minister of Health Ussene Isse shared these details during a broadcast of the “Cartas na Mesa” program on Radio Mozambique.

Minister Isse revealed that currently, there are five hundred foreign medical specialists working in Mozambique. This influx of foreign expertise is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the healthcare sector amid pressing needs for specialized medical services.

Additionally, Minister Isse disclosed plans for the introduction of a new electronic system to monitor the distribution of medicines within the country’s hospitals. This system aims to combat the issue of medication diversion, ensuring that the medicines purchased by the State effectively reach the intended health facilities. He emphasized that there is no valid reason for the annual State procurement of medicines not to reach these health units.
