Authorities in the Dominican Republic have escalated efforts to locate a college student from Northern Virginia who disappeared while vacationing during spring break. A specialized task force, comprising police and forensic experts, is intensifying their search, with notable involvement from the FBI and U.S. embassy representatives, focusing on security camera footage from March 3 onward when the woman and her friends arrived in the country.

The missing individual, Konanki, was staying at a hotel in Punta Cana with five female companions. Reports indicate that she entered the water at the beach with a male companion who is currently under investigation. Initial fears suggested that she may have drowned after the male claimed, “the waves swept her away,” according to Jensen Sánchez, a spokesman for Civil Defense.

Sheriff Mike Chapman from Loudoun County noted that the male accompanying Konanki did not travel with her group from the University of Pittsburgh. Dominican authorities have identified him as a 24-year-old guest at the same resort, the Riu Republica. Statements from the National Police affirmed that the young man has been interviewed, and the investigative process is being expanded to verify his preliminary testimony.

As of late Tuesday, almost a week post-disappearance, extensive searches involving helicopters, boats, drones, and police dogs have yielded minimal leads. The National Police announced a renewed effort to interview everyone who was with Konanki, including hotel staff, to ascertain details regarding her movements and interactions prior to her disappearance.

Dominican President Luis Abinader urged the deployment of all necessary resources to aid in the search. Abinader has stated, “We are concerned… all government agencies are searching,” emphasizing the seriousness of the case as investigators continue to analyze the events that transpired at the beach.

The FBI, while not detailing its specific involvement, reiterated its commitment to assisting when American citizens are involved in cases of disappearance abroad. Sheriff Chapman confirmed that Konanki holds Indian citizenship and has permanent residency in the United States but refrained from discussing the ongoing investigation.

A family friend traveling to the Dominican Republic expressed skepticism regarding the drowning theory, suggesting that the circumstances could indicate abduction or kidnapping due to the lack of evidence regarding her whereabouts. The friend stated, “They couldn’t find her in the resort. They couldn’t find her in the hospitals. Then where is she?”
