Cyclone Jude: Casualties and Destruction in Mozambique
Cyclone Jude has caused six fatalities and damaged over 900 homes in Mozambique. The storm produced winds of up to 195 km/h and heavy rainfall, affecting over 9,500 people. This storm is the third to impact the area in four months, following Cyclone Chido and Cyclone Dikeledi.
Cyclone Jude has tragically resulted in the loss of at least six lives and caused extensive damage in northern Mozambique, affecting over 900 homes. The cyclone hit on Monday, exhibiting winds reaching speeds of 195 km/h (120 mph) and significant rainfall of over 250 mm (10 inches) within a 24-hour period, as reported by the National Institute of Meteorology.
Despite having weakened to a tropical storm, Cyclone Jude continues to unleash heavy rainfall, strong winds, and thunderstorms, further impacting the affected communities. The National Institute for Risk and Disaster Management has noted that more than 9,500 individuals have been affected, with a reported 20 injuries resulting from the storm.
Importantly, Cyclone Jude marks the third storm to strike Mozambique in recent months. Previously, Cyclone Chido resulted in at least 120 fatalities and the destruction of nearly 120,000 homes in December. Furthermore, Cyclone Dikeledi, which occurred in mid-January, claimed five lives and resulted in the destruction of almost 3,500 homes.
In summary, Cyclone Jude has had a devastating impact on northern Mozambique, leading to loss of life, extensive property damage, and displacing thousands. As the region continues to face severe weather events, the frequency and intensity of such storms underscore the need for enhanced disaster preparedness and response measures.
