NDLEA Thwarts International Drug Smuggling Attempts, Arrests Two Suspects
The NDLEA intercepted drug shipments headed for the U.S., Saudi Arabia, and Europe, arresting two suspects. Seized narcotics included cocaine and tramadol, cleverly concealed in various items. The agency continues its War Against Drug Abuse while prosecuting smuggling attempts at Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) recently intercepted illegal drug shipments from Nigeria destined for the United States, Saudi Arabia, Italy, Poland, and the United Arab Emirates. Spokesperson Femi Babafemi reported that the confiscated narcotics included cocaine, tramadol, and other drugs. The traffickers attempted to transport these drugs using logistics firms and through Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, concealing them in various items such as prayer beads and clothing.
Two individuals have been arrested in connection with these smuggling attempts. A 43-year-old businesswoman was apprehended on March 8 while attempting to board an Air France flight to Italy, where 190 parcels of tramadol and a parcel of cannabis were found in her luggage. She allegedly confessed to purchasing the drugs for resale in Italy.
In another incident on March 11, a 60-year-old suspect was stopped at the airport while trying to send a package disguised as clothing, which contained 400 grams of cannabis intended for New York, USA. Additionally, NDLEA operatives seized over two kilograms of illicit drugs, including tramadol and other narcotics concealed within Vitamin C bottles and garments.
Between March 10 and March 12, further interceptions included 230 grams of cocaine cleverly hidden in prayer beads and shoe soles, destined for Saudi Arabia, Poland, and the UAE. Despite these stern enforcement actions, the NDLEA continues to run its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaigns across the nation to raise awareness and combat drug trafficking.
The NDLEA’s recent operations highlight their commitment to combating drug trafficking through diligent enforcement and public awareness efforts. The successful interception of significant drug shipments destined for various countries underscores the ongoing challenges of drug smuggling organizations in Nigeria. The agency’s proactive measures, including arrests and ongoing community campaigns, aim to reduce drug abuse and reinforce public safety.
