His remarks were made during a visit to the Entente accommodation centre, located in the Nampula province, where displaced residents from cyclone Jude have sought refuge.

Approximately 400 households have taken shelter at the Entente centre, having been evacuated from Sangane village, which suffered severe flooding due to cyclone Jude last week. Cyclone Jude impacted around 100,000 individuals, with at least 14 confirmed fatalities reported thus far. President Chapo emphasized his visit to Nampula, the hardest-hit province, to express solidarity with the affected communities.

During his visit, President Chapo acknowledged the efforts of the National Disaster Management Institute (INGD) and local disaster management committees in mitigating the loss of life caused by the storm. He assessed the destruction while touring key transportation routes that cyclone Jude had rendered impassable and expressed concern that the number of casualties might increase as authorities reach remote locations.

Chapo inspected the 200-meter-long bridge over the Monapo River in Meconta district, which plays a vital role in the country’s north-south highway (EN1), noting its condition following the cyclone. Additionally, he mentioned another damaged bridge over the Mecuburi River, also critical to EN1. The President stated that contractors have been tasked with repairing the infrastructure. “The damage to the roads is enormous,” he remarked, expressing the necessity of witnessing the impact first-hand.
