The overall car theft rate in Kenya has seen a significant decrease of 28% in 2024 compared to the previous year, with 327 vehicles reported stolen versus 419 in 2023.

The report, published by the Association of Kenyan Insurers (AKI), suggests that enhanced security measures and heightened caution among vehicle owners and law enforcement have contributed to the decline in incidents of theft. However, the recovery rates for stolen vehicles remain low, with only 15.92% of such instances leading to successful recoveries.

In addition to Toyotas, the report highlights other popular vehicle brands among thieves. The second most stolen brand is Isuzu, accounting for 12.88%, followed by Mazda at 7.06%, Nissan at 5.83%, and Mitsubishi at 3.99%. The data reveals a clear pattern in vehicle preference among car burglars.

The most targeted body type for theft was station wagons, comprising 67.80% of all thefts. Other frequently stolen body types included lorries (11.46%), saloons (6.81%), and pick-ups (3.72%). In terms of color, white vehicles were the most stolen, comprising 39.80% of thefts, followed by silver (16.72%) and black (15.38%). Furthermore, 32.52% of the stolen vehicles had an insured value of less than Sh1 million.
