The Kenyan authorities have issued an arrest warrant for Ibrahim Rotich, the husband of renowned athlete Agnes Tirop, who is suspected of her murder. Tirop, a celebrated track star, was tragically stabbed to death in October 2021 at the age of 25, an event that sent shockwaves throughout the athletics community. Despite being summoned to appear in court, Rotich failed to show up, prompting legal action by pursuing attorney Leonard Okaka, who noted his inability to locate Rotich.

Eldoret High Court Judge Robert Wananda issued the warrant on Tuesday, requiring Rotich’s presence in court by April 8. He had previously been released on bail in November 2023, after two years of detention, with restrictions against leaving Uasin Gishu County, where Eldoret is located. Legal representatives have questioned Rotich’s attendance and adherence to his bail conditions, including his weekly check-ins with the police.

The case adds to a concerning trend in Kenya, where several prominent female athletes have faced violence, with rising incidents of murders linked to their relationships. Notably, last year, Ugandan runner Rebecca Cheptegei was also a victim, marking a troubling pattern since 2021.
