Russia’s Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu Visits North Korea Again

Sergei Shoigu, the Secretary of Russia’s Security Council, has arrived in Pyongyang to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. This visit, occurring on March 21, marks Shoigu’s second visit to North Korea in a six-month period, following his previous engagement in September 2024. The meetings, as reported by South Korean news agency Yonhap, involve discussions with Kim Jong-un and other officials regarding critical matters of mutual interest.

Earlier this month, Andrey Rudenko, the Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia, also visited North Korea. His discussions with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui emphasized the need for organizing high-level political contacts between the two nations. These recent interactions occur amidst North Korea reportedly supplying military support to Russia amid its conflict in Ukraine.

In the past fall, North Korea purportedly deployed approximately 12,000 soldiers to assist Russia in its military operations in Ukraine, according to Ukrainian intelligence. These troops have engaged in combat within Russia’s Kursk region. After suffering heavy casualties, they were temporarily withdrawn but have since been redeployed for additional offensive action. Moreover, South Korean intelligence indicates that North Korea continues to send support troops to bolster Russia’s military.

Additionally, reports suggest that North Korea is receiving substantial technical assistance from Moscow to advance its drone development capabilities, showcasing a significant military collaboration between the two nations. These developments underscore the evolving dynamics of their bilateral relationship and the implications for regional security.
