Sudan’s Army Strengthens Control in Khartoum Amidst Ongoing Conflict

The Sudanese army has recently reclaimed several strategic sites in Khartoum from the RSF, including the presidential palace and the central bank. Despite retaining control over key areas, the RSF still poses a significant threat. The conflict, which has resulted in widespread casualties and displacement, shows signs of potentially nearing its conclusion as the army regains lost ground.

The Sudanese army, along with allied militias, has successfully regained key strategic sites in the capital, Khartoum, from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) after capturing the presidential palace. Witnesses noted that control was also reinstated over the central bank headquarters, the National Museum, and several other significant locations, including the Friendship Hall and Tuti Island. These victories represent a reversal from earlier losses sustained by the army since the onset of hostilities on April 15, 2023, when the RSF first seized control of critical government infrastructures.

Though the army has reclaimed substantial areas, the RSF continues to hold critical positions, including the international airport and numerous residential districts across Khartoum and adjoining regions such as Omdurman and Bahri. Videos circulating on social media depicted celebrations among soldiers and volunteers at the recaptured sites, particularly near Al Muqran, where the Blue and White Nile converge. Army chief Gen. Abdel Fattah Al Burhan expressed determination to eliminate the RSF, asserting there would be no negotiations, emphasizing the need to honor the sacrifices made by fallen soldiers.

Despite attempts by Saudi Arabia and the United States to mediate ceasefires, fighting persists, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and displacing over 12 million individuals. With the army gaining momentum in Khartoum, focus may soon shift towards the RSF-controlled regions of Darfur and Kordofan. Military analysts suggest that while the RSF is significantly weakened, urban combat tactics could allow them to extend the conflict, although the prospects of a resolution appear closer as the army continues to reclaim territory.

The Sudanese army has made considerable strides in regaining control of Khartoum from the Rapid Support Forces, reversing earlier setbacks. Despite the RSF retaining key positions, the momentum appears to favor the army, leading to a potential shift in focus towards other RSF-held regions.
