Internal Dissent Within Renamo: Protests Erupt in Gaza Province
Former Renamo members held a protest in Xai-Xai, demanding the resignation of leader Ossufo Momade and provincial delegate Felix Tivane. They accused the party leadership of corruption and loss of position in opposition. Tensions rose during the demonstration, prompting calls for an urgent National Council meeting.
On Thursday, members of the former rebel group Renamo in Mozambique staged a demonstration at their offices in Xai-Xai, the capital of the Gaza province. They demanded the resignation of party leader Ossufo Momade and the provincial delegate, Felix Tivane, citing dissatisfaction with the lack of internal communication and perceived corruption within the party.
The demonstrators, identifying as demobilised former guerrillas, called for the closure of Renamo’s offices amidst tensions that resulted in confrontations between their group and Momade’s supporters. They expressed that under Momade’s seven-year leadership, Renamo had diminished from its position as the primary opposition force.
The protestors called for an urgent convening of the National Council to discuss these grievances and urged for Momade’s removal. Tivane responded to the allegations, stating that the dissenters are attempting to destabilize the party. The demonstrators vowed to persist in their protest in Xai-Xai until Momade is ousted from his leadership role.
The protests by former Renamo insurgents in Gaza reflect deepening internal strife within the party regarding leadership and integrity. The calls for Ossufo Momade’s resignation and the urgency for discussions at the National Council indicate significant discontent among party members. As tensions rise between protestors and supporters, the future dynamics of Renamo will depend on the outcomes of these demands.
