Nigerian Woman Arrested for Trafficking Daughter and Others to Mauritania
A Nigerian woman and an accomplice were arrested for trafficking young girls, including her daughter, to Mauritania for sex work, receiving N50,000 per victim. They were apprehended in Lagos and confessed to their roles in the syndicate, which manipulated victims under false pretenses. Both will face legal charges following further investigation.
Authorities from the Zone 2 Command of the Nigeria Police Force apprehended a woman along with an accomplice for their involvement in trafficking young girls, including her own daughter, to Mauritania for the purpose of commercial sex work, with each transaction allegedly yielding N50,000. The arrests took place on March 22 at a hideout located in the Meiran area of Lagos State, as confirmed by Zonal Public Relations Officer, Umma Ayuba.
Following their capture, investigations revealed that the syndicate had been collaborating with accomplices in Mauritania to lure victims under misleading circumstances. Upon interrogation, the suspects confessed to their roles in the criminal activities. The statement detailed that operatives from the Zonal Intelligence Response Squad, led by SP Francis Kpoughul, conducted the raid at the suspects’ base.
The primary suspect acknowledged having been introduced to a woman in Mauritania by another individual currently serving a sentence for similar offenses. Furthermore, she admitted to receiving N50,000 for each young girl trafficked, including her own 19-year-old daughter. She described her arrangement with the Mauritanian woman who tasked her with recruiting girls under the age of 22 for sex work and stated that her earnings from this illegal activity surpassed N500,000.
In addition, the second suspect expressed that she was hired to recruit girls as domestic workers. However, she grew suspicious after one of the girls she introduced was rejected by the first suspect, leading her to discover the disturbing reality of sex trafficking. Realizing the grim nature of the situation, she opted to withdraw from further involvement in the operation.
The police confirmed that both culprits would face charges in court upon the completion of the investigation, highlighting the ongoing efforts to combat such heinous crimes in society.
This incident underscores the grave issue of human trafficking, particularly concerning the exploitation of vulnerable young women and girls. The collaboration with overseas accomplices poses a significant challenge for law enforcement. The ongoing investigation emphasizes the commitment of authorities to address these criminal activities and bring the perpetrators to justice.
