Germany Cancels Meeting with Rwanda Amid DRC Conflict

Germany has canceled a February meeting with Rwandan officials due to Rwanda’s involvement in fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo. On Tuesday, Germany announced the cancellation of a scheduled meeting with Rwandan officials due to concerns regarding Rwanda’s involvement in the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This decision comes in light of recent violent clashes involving the M23 armed group and Rwandan forces, which have intensified around the city of Goma, exacerbating an already critical humanitarian crisis. A representative from Germany’s development ministry stated that discussions on development cooperation would only recommence once hostilities have ceased and all parties withdraw from combat.

The humanitarian situation in the eastern DRC has deteriorated markedly as rapid offensives led by the M23 armed group, allegedly supported by Rwandan troops, have resulted in significant casualties and displacements. Reports indicate that over 17 individuals lost their lives and more than 360 were injured within two days of renewed fighting. Additionally, the United Nations has noted a halt in food assistance in the region due to the escalating violence, emphasizing the urgent need for a resolution to this crisis.
